Countless bands have made up the musical pantheon known as "Psychedelic Rock", encompassing many stylistic variations on the Progressive-Psychedelic axis. But one of Europe's true contemporary heavyweights is surely Norway's very own Motorpsycho.
With their earliest roots in indie rock, metal and psychedelica, and throughout their history exploring a rich primordial stew of rock, pop, free-jazz, west coast psychedelica and many other musical styles, Motorpsycho made a name for themselves since the early nineties with several classic albums & stunning live shows.
Playing a free-form improvisational brand of psychedelic rock, Motorpsycho -consisting of Bent [bass / vocals], Snah [guitar / vocals] and Kenneth [drums]- are like an acid drenched version of the paths laid out by Can, Amon Duul II, The Allman Brothers and Grand Funk.
Originally a communune born from the German student movement of the 1960s, Amon Düül formed with a free form improvisational aesthetic. A rift soon developed among its members, the split resulting in the formation of Amon Düül II, one of the most influential bands in the canon of Kosmische Musik pioneers.
Early albums like "Phallus Dei", "Yeti", "Tanz Der Lemminge", "Carnival In Babylon", and "Wolf City" showcase ground breaking music that has inspired generations of Psychedelic, Space Rock and Experimental musicians. The later 1970s saw the band transition to a more accessible brand of progressive rock, though these too had their stunning moments of Teutonic power and inspiration. Roadburn 2009 will be a unique opportunity to see a lineup of the band that includes founding members John Weinzierl [git, synth, voc] Chris Karrer [git, oud, violin, voc], Renate Knaup-Krötenschwanz [voc], and early member Lothar Meid [b,voc], along with Jan Kahlert [perc, voc] and Danny Fichelscher [dr].
